Australia is Testing a New Emergency Alert System – Here’s What to Expect

New emergency phone alerts are coming to Australia. Here’s what international students need to know

If you’re studying in Australia, don’t be surprised if your phone suddenly vibrates, sounds a loud alarm or displays an emergency message later this year. It’s all part of a nationwide test of AusAlert, Australia’s new emergency warning system.

What is AusAlert?

AusAlert is a new national emergency messaging system designed to warn people about serious emergencies, including bushfires, floods, cyclones and other life-threatening events. It may also be used during major public safety incidents, such as police operations or terrorist attacks.

Unlike the current SMS-based system, AusAlert uses cell broadcast technology. This allows authorities to send alerts instantly to compatible mobile devices within a specific area, even when mobile networks are busy.

When will the test happen?

A national test will take place on Monday 27 July 2026. Most compatible phones, and some smartwatches and tablets, will receive a test alert at the same time. You’ll hear a loud siren-like sound, your device will vibrate, and a message will clearly state that it’s only a test. No action is required.

What should international students do?

There’s nothing you need to do before the test, but it’s a good idea to:

  • Keep your phone’s software up to date so it’s compatible with the new system.
  • Read emergency alerts carefully if you receive them in the future.
  • Follow any instructions from emergency services if a real alert is issued.

Australia experiences natural hazards such as bushfires, floods and cyclones, so understanding how emergency warnings work is an important part of staying safe while you’re studying here.
