Sandra is a fiercely independent woman in her 50s whose solitary life is disrupted when her neighbour is suddenly left alone with two young children. Drawn into their orbit despite herself, she becomes part of a makeshift family that neither she nor they had planned.
What follows is a study of how bonds form in unexpected ways, rather than the conventional story of romance or parenthood one might expect. Sandra has built her life around autonomy, with no desire for children and no need to justify it.
Yet proximity, routine and care gradually create a connection that breaks down her initial reluctance. The film, which is adapted from Alice Ferney’s novel L’Intimité, is clear-eyed about this process: attachment is shown as something that develops through presence rather than instinct. Carine Tardieu directs with restraint, favouring close observation over high drama. The early shock of loss gives way to a quieter rhythm shaped by daily life, where small gestures carry weight. Her use of a largely unobtrusive camera keeps the focus on performance and interaction rather than distracting with visual flourishes.
Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi plays against type as Sandra, holding emotion in check and allowing change to register gradually. Opposite her, Pio Marmaï brings a raw, unsettled energy to a man negotiating grief while trying to rebuild his life. The presence of the children anchors the film, acting as a constant measure of time passing and relationships shifting.
Quietly meditative, L’Attachement examines how people come to rely on one another, and how that reliance can alter even the most carefully constructed independence.
