Why do I need to know fdp?
It's a common acronym in casual forms of written French, such as text messaging or social media. But this is one that we are suggesting that French learners 'know don't show'.
What does it mean?
The acronym stands for fils de pute - this literally translates as 'son of a whore' and as you would expect it is an insult. In fact it's a strong insult - it's sometimes translated into English as 'son of a bitch', but it's actually much stronger and more offensive than that. This is pretty much the nuclear option if you want to insult someone, and it's a phrase that doesn't really have a milder/jokey way of saying it, unlike French swearwords such as putain or con.
We therefore suggest that French learners refrain from using it.

So why are we telling you about it? Because it's still useful to know some casual words or phrases, even if you don't intend to use them.

Because this is an acronym, you won't really hear it in spoken French - although if you were to say it, it would be pronounced eff-day-pay - it's reserved for informal writing, similar to NTM. For this reason it's often paired with slangy, colloquial and abbreviated French.
