It may sound like an experimental evening at the Berlin Philarmonic, but this German word actually refers to something a lot less harmonious.

What does it mean?
Das Pfeifkonzert (pronounced like this) combines pfeifen - to whistle - with das Konzert, meaning concert.
It describes the loud chorus of whistles produced by a crowd to express its displeasure, roughly equivalent to a barrage of boos or jeers in English.
Although pfeifen can also refer to playing a pipe, a Pfeifkonzert sadly doesn't involve an orchestra of tiny flutes. Instead, German crowds often resort to loud, fingers-in-the-mouth whistling to make their feelings clear.
Nevertheless, to cultures that tend to angrily boo and jeer at hated public figures, the German Pfeifkonzert can still sound surprisingly melodic.

A combination of both took place during the 2026 World Cup Final, when US President Donald Trump walked onto the pitch after the final whistle. Trump appeared in the New Jersey stadium following Spain's 1-0 victory against Argentina to a particularly raucous Pfeifkonzert, which no amount of Spanish celebrations could drown out.
According to one German media report, Trump was ausgepfiffen (booed, or literally "piped off") by a large number of crowd members as he handed out medals to the footballers alongside Infantino. Despite the Pfeifkonzert, the president wasn't deterred from crashing the Spanish team's celebratory photos as well.
