Tired of guessing whether your Deutsche Bahn train will actually arrive on time? A new free website uses historical data to show you how likely your next train is to be delayed.
For many passengers, delays on Germany’s rail network are an accepted – if exasperating – part of the journey.
DelayBahn could help. Developed as a side project by Shashank Tripathi, the free platform does not exactly predict future delays, but it shows users how trains have performed in the recent past to give passengers an idea about which routes are more or less punctual.
Born of frustration
DelayBahn is an independent project with no connection to Deutsche Bahn. According to its creator, the idea emerged from personal frustration with persistent train delays.
In a LinkedIn post, Tripathi wrote that DelayBahn uses historical train delay data to answer the questions that really matter when planning rail trips in Germany:
- How late is this train usually?
- Is there a more reliable alternative?
- Is that 7-minute transfer actually realistic?

A smarter way to plan rail journeys
DelayBahn functions much like a conventional journey planner. Users enter their departure station, destination, travel date and preferred time, and are then presented with a range of possible routes.
What sets the platform apart is the additional information displayed alongside each option. DelayBahn analyses historical delay data and highlights average delays, connection risks and transfer reliability.
Users can also filter results to find connections with the fewest delays, the lowest risk of missing a connection, the fewest changes or the lowest fare.
The site allows travellers to examine data from the previous seven, 15 or 30 days and view detailed statistics for individual services.
This could be particularly useful when planning important journeys or transfers. For example, a connection that appears slightly slower on paper might actually be more reliable than a theoretically faster alternative.
The platform also includes information about passenger compensation rights and can help travellers determine whether a past journey may qualify for a refund under EU rail passenger regulations.
